Gross bone cortex is not necessarily a fracture. Bone cortical roughness is an imaging description that is often seen on plain radiographs. For example, a fracture is highly suspected if the site of cortical roughness has been previously traumatized and there is now significant pressure pain. This type of fracture, if present, is an incomplete or stable fracture. In addition to this, further CT or MRI examinations can be performed to clarify the presence or absence of a fracture, or the exact location and extent of the fracture. Therefore, it is important to return to the orthopedic department with an X-ray plain film as soon as possible to clarify the cause of the condition.
