What are sciatica symptoms?

Most sciatica occurs gradually, and the pain is radiating from the buttocks, posterior lateral thigh, lateral calf to the heel or dorsum of the foot. Sciatica may be aggravated by activity or increased abdominal pressure in certain positions or there may be electric shock-like radiating pain. Some patients may present with anterior medial thigh or groin pain, or bilateral sciatica with perineal numbness and urinary and diaphoretic disorders. Female patients show urinary incontinence, and male patients may have impotence. The symptoms of leg pain vary widely. Generally, lumbar pain appears first, followed by gradual appearance of radiating pain in the lower extremities, and some patients have leg pain immediately after a traumatic injury; a few patients have only lower extremity symptoms without lumbar pain, and the pain symptoms are often relieved after rest, and the pain can be aggravated by bending and increased abdominal pressure.
