What should I do if I have a total or partial ear loss?

Congenital defects are mostly seen in small ear deformities, while acquired auricular defects are caused by cuts, crush injuries, lacerations, burns, bites, infections, surgical resections, etc. They are collectively called traumatic auricular defects. It can be unilateral or bilateral. The defect can be partial or total and requires surgical repair. There are two types of surgery: early and late repair. Early repair of auricular defects: 1. Once trauma occurs to the auricle, as long as there is a little skin tissue connected to the body, it can be sutured in situ. Because the blood supply of the auricle is very rich, even if there is a little tissue connected, the chance of survival after suturing is also great. Do not forcibly rip off the tissue because it is too small. 2. When the auricular tissue is completely severed from the body, the first step is to protect the severed tissue and bring it to the hospital with you to be handled by the doctor. If the severed tissue is less than 1cm in length, and there is no contusion and the wound is neat, in situ suture reimplantation is feasible; if a large piece of tissue is severed or a total auricular defect is present, microsurgical techniques are applied to anastomose the blood vessels for replantation. 2. Late repair of auricular defects: 1. Small auricular defects: the edges of the defect can be incised, and additional incisions can be made appropriately and then sutured in layers. The defect can also be repaired by using a composite tissue flap transplantation of the contralateral auricle (the width of the transplanted tissue should not exceed 1.5 cm) or local flap method. 2.When the auricular defect is large or total auricular defect, skin expansion is often required for auricular defect repair or total auricular reconstruction, and the scaffolding material for the reconstructed auricle can be your own rib cartilage or artificial material. If you do not want to undergo reconstructive surgery, you can also use a pseudoprosthesis.
