What to do if you have a sore throat during pregnancy

Pain in the throat is the most common symptom of pharyngeal disorders, which can be caused by pharyngeal diseases, but also by diseases in the adjacent organs of the pharynx, and can be a concomitant symptom of systemic diseases. Due to the special nature of pregnancy, the use of medication for sore throat in pregnant women should be cautious. Once a pregnant woman develops a sore throat, it is necessary to clarify what is causing the pain. Most of the pain in the throat of pregnant women is caused by inflammation of the mucous membrane of the throat, most commonly acute pharyngitis, acute tonsillitis and other diseases caused by upper respiratory tract infections; chronic pharyngitis and other causes of pain in the throat. Pregnancy, which leads to increased intra-abdominal pressure and compression of the upper gastrointestinal tract, leading to gastroesophageal reflux pharyngitis, is also one of the main causes of sore throat in pregnant women. If it is an upper respiratory tract infection caused by a viral infection, there is no need for medication and there is no specific antiviral medication to treat it, drink more water, take rest and avoid complications. If it is an acute attack of chronic tonsillitis caused by bacterial infection, especially purulent tonsillitis, it can be treated with penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics. If the sore throat is caused by gastroesophageal reflux, do not eat spicy and irritating food; eat less and more meals; and sleep with your head properly padded to avoid reflux of stomach contents. Due to the special condition of pregnant women, when the throat is sore, you need to go to the otolaryngology department in time. When medication is needed, it should be used under the guidance of a doctor.
