What is amblyopia?

Amblyopia is a common eye disease in children. The so-called amblyopia refers to those whose vision cannot be corrected to normal after examination of the inside and outside of the eye without organic lesions, and the amblyopic eye can be said to have a see]see ornament. Amblyopia is a serious problem regarding children’s health because it not only leads to low vision in one eye, but also no sound monocular function in both eyes, which makes the brain receive different information than normal children and easily causes children to have learning difficulties and be withdrawn. Some data show that 15% of children with learning difficulties are caused by visual dysfunction. Binocular monovision can also be simply described as stereo vision, which is the human ability to perceive the shape of objects in three dimensions. The shape of objects includes distance, height, depth, concavity, and other characteristics. This is a special function acquired during the long-term evolution of living things, only humans and some higher animals have. Stereo vision directly affects the efficiency of labor, work quality, and production safety. As a result of amblyopia in adulthood, stereo vision is too poor to perform certain tasks that require precise positioning (such as flying an airplane or even driving a car, playing ball, microsurgery ……) , bringing serious obstacles to talent selection and career choice. There are five main types of amblyopia: strabismic amblyopia, refractive error amblyopia (including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, etc.), refractive aberration amblyopia, form deprivation amblyopia and congenital amblyopia. The traditional treatment is to remove the deprivation factor, correct the refractive error and masking therapy. It takes at least 2-3 years for treatment to heal, and is only truly cured if there is no recurrence after 3 years. Therefore, parents must not be too much trouble to give their babies glasses is not once and for all, in accordance with the requirements of the ophthalmologist, timely review and replacement of glasses, according to the nature and period of amblyopia under the guidance of doctors to do the appropriate treatment, rather than blindly listen to the manufacturer’s propaganda indiscriminately use the treatment device, in order to achieve the ultimate purpose of amblyopia treatment – -The ultimate goal of amblyopia treatment is to restore the child’s sound binocular vision and establish normal stereo vision. The effect of treatment is closely related to the age, the younger the child, the better the effect and the greater the possibility of obtaining a functional cure, while in adulthood the cure is basically hopeless. In order to detect amblyopia early, parents should first pay attention to their child’s abnormal habits. If you find that your child’s eyes are prone to tears and fear of light, and do not respond to brightly colored objects without following them, it is best to go to the hospital for an examination, no matter how young the child is. Children with refractive error and amblyopia may generally appear to like to get very close when reading books or watching TV, and be slow to respond in unfamiliar environments. Another easy way is to take your child to the hospital or consult with a pediatric ophthalmologist for a routine eye exam at the age of three to four to identify problems and solve them in a timely manner.
