Recently, under the guidance of the Department of Child Neurology and Rehabilitation, the first ketogenic diet therapy was launched in northern Jiangsu Province, bringing new hope for the treatment of refractory epilepsy in children. The first child who received ketogenic diet therapy was admitted to the Department of Child Neurology and Rehabilitation for “ketogenic therapy” on September 4. The child was initially judged to be suitable for ketogenic therapy based on the results of genetic metabolic screening. After treatment with ketogenic diet, the child’s seizure frequency was slightly reduced and the seizure symptoms were significantly reduced. The ketogenic diet is a combination of a high proportion of fat, moderate protein, and low carbonated water compounds, and is an effective treatment for children with intractable epilepsy and certain inborn metabolic disorders, with fewer side effects and no impact on the mental development of the child compared to drugs and surgery. Ketogenic diet therapy has been used clinically for 90 years and is widely practiced in the world, and is now available in 28 large hospitals in China. Ketogenic diet therapy is fast-acting, effective, and can effectively improve seizure conditions. The Department of Child Neurology and Rehabilitation has pioneered this therapy in Xuzhou, and will carry it out more widely in the future to help more children overcome intractable epilepsy.
