In recent years, with the clinical application of new generation of effective chemotherapy drugs, molecular targeting drugs, endocrine therapy drugs and new generation of bisphosphonates, as well as the improvement of radiotherapy and interventional pain relief techniques, more and more patients with advanced cancer pain in China have been able to relieve cancer pain and obtain good quality of life. However, it is undeniable that there is still a long way from the WHO’s goal of “making all cancer pain patients pain-free”, and cancer pain treatment in China is still facing serious challenges at this stage. After a series of training by the China Anti-Cancer Association and the hard work of experts from various professional committees, most clinical oncologists have made promising progress in understanding the level of cancer pain treatment, the degree of importance they attach to it, and the mastery of the World Health Organization’s three-step treatment principles for cancer pain and the new generation of therapeutic drugs and treatment methods. However, the large team of non-oncology doctors does not know enough and pay enough attention to the severity of cancer pain, cancer pain assessment methods and WHO three-step treatment principles, and irregularities such as unreasonable route of pain medication, fear of addiction to long-term use of pain medication, and insufficient dose of clinical medication are still common. The control of clinical use of cancer pain treatment drugs by health administrative departments is too strict, the training and promotion of “WHO three-step treatment plan for cancer pain” for doctors is not enough, the health education and popularization of cancer pain treatment for the society is not enough, and the health promotion work of news media is not in place, etc. are all important factors affecting the level of cancer pain treatment in China. These factors are important factors affecting the level of cancer pain treatment in China. Based on the above-mentioned phenomena, the Science Popularization Department of China Anti-Cancer Association has made “standardizing cancer pain treatment and improving the quality of life of cancer patients” the focus of cancer prevention and treatment science popularization in 2009. The Department will actively promote the World Health Organization’s three-step pain treatment principles and protocols, cooperate with relevant committees of the Chinese Medical Association to promote training of non-oncology physicians in cancer pain assessment and standardized treatment, and cooperate with radio and television, newspapers and magazines and online media to strengthen the popularization of cancer pain prevention and treatment knowledge and the promotion of new drugs, new technologies and new methods of cancer pain treatment. It is especially important to emphasize that the current new generation of chemotherapy drugs, endocrine therapy and targeted therapy drugs can effectively relieve cancer pain, and the new generation of conformal intensity modulated radiotherapy technology and minimally invasive interventional therapy technology can effectively control cancer pain; combined with the new generation of oral morphine extended-release tablets and Doregis patch, they can make most cancer pain patients pain-free. Effective physical means and chemically targeted drugs can also enable pain medications to be gradually reduced until they are discontinued. Clinicians must make full use of the available physical and chemical means to relieve pain for cancer pain patients. Since most patients with advanced cancer pain have different degrees of depression and other psychological disorders, we also need to cooperate with psychiatrists and psychologists to provide careful psychological treatment and pharmacological intervention. In conclusion, we hope that more clinicians will understand that cancer pain treatment requires multidisciplinary and comprehensive treatment, and realize that cancer pain patients need loving care and psychological support. We also hope that cancer centers and pain centers in China with the conditions to do so will strengthen academic exchanges and project cooperation at home and abroad, and conduct in-depth research on new theories and methods of cancer pain treatment, so as to better improve and enhance the quality of life of patients with advanced cancer pain. We also hope to cooperate with the media to inform cancer patients and the society of new drugs, technologies and methods of cancer pain treatment, so that the whole society will pay attention to cancer pain patients and cancer pain treatment!
