Treatment of facial muscle spasm

The current clinical treatment of facial spasm mainly includes medication and surgery. Therapeutic drugs mainly include carbamazepine, phenytoin sodium and various sedative and tranquilizing drugs, such as phenobarbital, but only a few patients can reduce the symptoms. Microvascular decompression (MVD) is currently the most effective treatment for facial spasm. The principle of MVD is to find the responsible blood vessel that is compressing the facial nerve by exploring the brainstem segment of the facial nerve, and isolate it from the facial nerve to release the compression on the facial nerve, thus curing the facial spasm fundamentally.
