At the 2014 ASCO Annual Meeting, more than 25,000 oncology specialists from around the world gathered to discuss relevant research affecting oncology treatment. Today, positive findings were presented from four clinical studies targeting new targeted therapeutics for advanced ovarian cancer, lung cancer, thyroid cancer and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The findings suggest the existence of new ways to slow tumor growth and thereby extend the lives of patients with these tumors who have developed resistance to current treatments. Ibrutinib may be an effective new treatment option for older patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The study is ongoing, and early results suggest that Ibrutinib could be a new treatment option for elderly patients with relapsed chronic lymphocytic leukemia by keeping them from getting worse, in addition to the standard treatment for these patients. Furthermore, investigators have reported minimal serious adverse effects with Ibrutinib, making it an important new treatment candidate for older patients.
