Causes of redness and swelling of the upper eyelids

A common cause for noticing significant redness in the upper eyelids, is caused by inflammation or allergies. Examples include eyelid blepharitis, and contact dermatitis. If a significant redness of the upper eyelid is noticed, it is usually accompanied by a painful pressure lump, and sometimes a significant pain in the corner of the eye when blinking is noticed. This symptom is considered blepharitis, which may be related to the patient’s lack of sleep and decreased resistance after staying up late, and is usually considered inflammation of the lid gland following a bacterial infection. Therefore, for treatment, hot compresses on the eyelids and local anti-inflammatory treatment of the eyes are recommended, as well as systemic anti-inflammatory treatment if necessary. If there is significant redness and itching of the upper eyelids, and sometimes pigmentation, wrinkling, or peeling of the eyelids, contact dermatitis is considered. It may be related to cosmetic products, but it may also be an allergy to eye drops, ointment, or food, and some patients may not be able to identify the cause of the allergy. After symptoms appear, try to avoid re-exposure to the allergen. Topical anti-allergic eye ointment is used topically on the eyes, and systemic anti-allergic treatment is given if necessary. Alternatively, it may be caused by a viral infection of the eyelid, such as herpes zoster viral blepharitis. There is also a check for thyroid-related eye disease in the upper eyelid swelling, which should be checked by the ophthalmology department of a regular hospital.
