Can atrophic gastritis become cancerous?

In daily life, we often hear some patients say that atrophic gastritis is a precancerous disease of stomach cancer and should be removed surgically, otherwise it may develop into stomach cancer. In fact, this statement is not scientific. In recent years, scholars at home and abroad have done a lot of research on the relationship between atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer, and concluded that: atrophic gastritis is designated as a precancerous disease, and its occurrence is a long process with a combination of multiple causes, and the general evolution rule is “normal gastric mucosa – inflammation – atrophy – intestinalization – heterogeneous hyperplasia – gastric cancer”. China is a region with a high incidence of gastric cancer, with an incidence rate of 300.9/100,000, and the cancer rate of atrophic gastritis ranges from 2.55% to 7.46%. Although atrophic gastritis can be transformed into gastric cancer, it has to go through several stages. Firstly, atrophic gastritis is divided into three stages: mild, moderate and severe, followed by mild, moderate and severe intestinal or atypical hyperplasia, and finally gastric cancer. The research shows that atrophic gastritis is reversible, so it should not be feared nor taken lightly, but should be “strategically despised but tactically valued”, actively correcting and treating factors that trigger atrophic gastritis, such as diet, lifestyle habits, mental psychology, and Helicobacter pylori infection. Chinese medicine has unique advantages in the treatment of atrophic gastritis, especially the idea that Chinese medicine uses evidence-based treatment not only improves clinical symptoms, but also reverses the lesioned gastric mucosa to varying degrees. However, the treatment of atrophic gastritis is a long process, and patients often discontinue the medication after the symptoms are relieved, making the disease recurrent or aggravated. Therefore, patients should establish a scientific view of consolidating treatment and should not stop or reduce medication without permission. According to clinical experience, the treatment of atrophic gastritis generally takes 3-6 months, while patients with intestinalization and atypical hyperplasia need 1 year or even longer. As the saying goes, “gastric disease is three parts treatment, seven parts nourishment”, for people with gastric disease is very important, change bad eating habits, avoid eating raw, cold, hard, sticky, spicy, greasy food, avoid tobacco, alcohol, strong tea, coffee, eat easily digestible, non-stimulating food for the stomach, eat more vegetables and fruits and other vitamin-rich foods. In addition, appropriate exercise and good mood can also help the treatment and recovery of the disease.
