Traction therapy for cervical spondylosis

Cervical traction is an effective treatment for cervical spondylosis, but in clinical rehabilitation, it is found that cervical traction is unacceptable to many patients. Many patients ask “will excessive cervical traction lead to paralysis” before traction therapy is implemented. Because of the fear of traction treatment, the best time for cervical spine rehabilitation is lost, and the course of the disease is prolonged and the risk is increased. Therefore, we summarize some knowledge of cervical traction through the following elaboration as follows for your reference. 1.The role of cervical traction in the treatment of cervical spondylosis First of all, let us explain that traction therapy is an important treatment method for spinal and extremity joint diseases, and is often used in conjunction with acupuncture, massage and physiotherapy in clinical rehabilitation treatment. Cervical traction can increase the vertebral space of the cervical spine; stretch the contracted neck tissue and improve the normal physiological function of the cervical spine; correct the disorder of the small joints in the vertebral space and restore the normal ordering of the spine; enlarge the intervertebral foramen and reduce the symptoms of nerve heel compression; and restore the normal sequence of the cervical spine. Therefore, the role of cervical traction therapy is extensive and is adopted by the majority of clinical rehabilitation practitioners. Professional cervical traction generally includes seated heavy hammer traction, reclining inclined self-weight traction, electric traction, door and window home traction, inflatable airbag traction and self-traction. The professional operation by rehabilitation doctors makes traction treatment relatively safe. The patient’s weight, height and posture are taken into account, while the patient’s disease assessment results are taken into account for a detailed assessment of the patient’s cervical spine symptoms. The evaluation results set the corresponding parameters for professional treatment. The important parameters are: traction time, traction angle, traction weight and traction position. These are not determined casually, but require a professional assessment to be finalized. 2, simple home cervical traction methods Home cervical traction is a positive method of treating chronic progressive disorders. You can make your own improved home pillow and jaw traction device, and there are various finished cervical traction devices available in the market, such as cowhide or artificial leather traction headgear, simple traction device hanging in the door frame, inflatable airbag cervical traction device, etc. Simple home cervical traction therapy is suitable for mild cervical spondylosis, and patients generally do not have time to go to the hospital for treatment, so they can choose this way to temporarily suffer from neck discomfort. In the implementation of home traction, the neck should be fully relaxed, which will increase the effect of traction. Inflation is generally done in accordance with the principle of gradual progress, and the air pressure should be moderate, so as not to cause breathing discomfort, dizziness, shoulder pain. In the event of discomfort and other conditions, prompt medical consultation and treatment should be provided. Before treatment, the cervical spine inflatable neck traction must be guided by a specialist to prevent accidents. It is worth noting that home traction is simple, convenient and practical. However, if the method is not appropriate, there are certain risks. Therefore, before traction is performed at home, it must be clearly diagnosed by a specialist and technically guided by a therapist to understand the safety performance. The home traction procedure must be scientific and strictly prohibited, and the three elements of traction are best set with the help of a therapist according to the condition and individual differences. As long as the appropriate home traction device is selected and the correct method is mastered, a better traction treatment effect can be achieved. Under what circumstances is cervical traction treatment not allowed? This is to master the following contraindications of cervical traction: 3, cervical traction contraindications (1) when the structural integrity of the cervical spine is damaged. Such as: tumor of the cervical spine and its adjacent tissues, tuberculosis and other diseases; cervical spine adjacent to the vascular damage disease; internal carotid artery severe stenosis with plaque formation. (2) Diseases in which cervical spine activities are absolutely contraindicated. For example: severe instability of the cervical spine, cervical vertebral fracture, obvious compression of the cervical spinal cord, fragmentation of the herniated intervertebral disc of the cervical spine, untreated trauma of the old cervical spine, insufficiency of important internal organs, hemorrhagic disease, aneurysm. (3) Diseases whose symptoms are aggravated after traction treatment. For example: acute strains, sprains, acute inflammation of soft tissues around the neck muscles, etc.; severe osteoporosis, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, congenital spinal deformity, women during menstruation, pregnant women, etc. (4) Relative contraindication. Patients with vertebral artery sclerosis, deformity, recovery from myocardial infarction, cerebral arteriosclerosis, hypertension and heart disease. Traction therapy should be used with caution or not advocated for those with more pronounced spinal cord compression in spinal cord type cervical spondylosis.
