Self-care for frozen shoulder

  I. Etiology
  Chinese medicine believes that
1, lack of qi and blood: old age and weakness, overwork, resulting in liver and kidney loss, lack of qi and blood, tendons and veins lose nourishment.
2, external cold and dampness: living in the wetlands, rain and wind, sleeping in the open shoulder at night when the wind, resulting in wind, cold and dampness in the veins, not pass is pain.
3, secondary trauma: secondary to shoulder trauma or other diseases of the shoulder, such as shoulder fracture, dislocation, fixed shoulder joint after upper limb surgery, tendonitis, etc., causing shoulder joint adhesions.
Western medicine considers the causes of frozen shoulder to be the following.
Internal causes – degenerative lesions, endocrine disorders; external causes – trauma, chronic strain, and cold.
  Symptoms
  1. Shoulder pain In the early stage, the pain is paroxysmal, often triggered by weather changes or exertion, and then gradually develops into persistent pain, which is widespread and gradually aggravates, with lightness during the day and heaviness at night. When the shoulder is hit or pulled, it can cause severe pain, which can be radiated or induced to the upper limbs, neck, and ear. In the early stage, the pain point is relatively clear, and in the late stage, the pain point is widespread. Taking painkillers or analgesics usually cannot completely stop the pain, and the pain point will shift with the prolongation of the disease.
  2. Restricted activity The shoulder joint function is widely restricted, the upper limb on the affected side is often internally rotated, active activities are restricted, and passive activities are also restricted, affecting daily life, making it difficult to comb hair, put on clothes, tie the belt and fork the waist. In severe cases, the function of the elbow joint is also limited, and the hand cannot touch the shoulder when the elbow is flexed.
3.Extensive pressure pain There is extensive pressure pain around the shoulder joint of different degrees, which often indicates the source of the lesion.
  4. Shoulder abduction When the shoulder joint is actively or passively abducted, the shoulder on the affected side is also lifted, forming a “shoulder abduction”, so it is called shoulder abduction.
5.Muscle atrophy Muscle atrophy can occur when the shoulder joint is adhered for a long time and its function is restricted, especially in the deltoid and supraspinatus muscles.
  C. Self-massage
  (1) Palm rubbing around the affected shoulder: Press the palm of the whole hand on the affected shoulder in a clockwise direction for 1 minute, so that the deep part is hot.
  (2) Press and knead the shoulder points: Use the thumb and middle finger of the healthy side to press and knead the front of the shoulder, shoulder k and shoulder chastity for 1 minute each, with obvious soreness and swelling.
  (3) Knead the shoulder: Use the palm of the healthy hand to press the affected shoulder and knead it up and down 10 times.
  (4) Shake the shoulder joint: Hold the affected elbow with the palm of the healthy side and shake the shoulder 10 times in the backward and forward directions.
  (5) Pulling the shoulder joint: Hold the wrist of the affected limb from behind with the healthy hand and pull it upward 10 times.
  Self-exercise
  (1) Climbing the wall Facing the wall, use both hands or one hand to move slowly upward along the wall to raise the upper limb as high as possible, and then slowly return downward to the original place. Repeat this 10 times.
  (2) pulling the hands behind the back, pull the affected hand with the healthy hand to make it gradually inward and upward. Repeat this 10 times.
  (3) External rotation exercise Stand with your back against the wall, hold the affected limb in a fist and bend the elbow, with the affected elbow against the chest wall, rotate the affected limb externally and try to make the back of the fist touch the wall. Repeat this 10 times.
  (4) hands to the sky standing, interlocking the fingers of both hands, from the front of the abdomen slowly lift, lift flat and pull upward, so repeatedly 10 times.
  (5) shrugging around standing, hands on the shoulders, forward and backward continuous around 10 circles; restore rest, and then do backward and forward continuous around 10 circles, the action should be slow, the amplitude from small to large.
  V. Self-protection
  (1) Pay attention to the warmth and cold is a very important measure to prevent frozen shoulder, especially for the affected shoulder, do not lie down when the wind is cold, hot day long blowing fan, air conditioning.
  (2) Massage therapy with functional exercise is satisfactory for frozen shoulder, but patients should not be afraid to exercise the shoulder joint because of pain. It is required to be persistent, gradual and different from person to person, to prevent excessive or improper, instead of damage.
The prognosis of tui na treatment for frozen shoulder is generally good, and recurrence is rare after healing. If patients cooperate with active functional exercise of the shoulder joint, the effect is even more remarkable. A small number of patients can show some self-healing phenomenon. In most patients, the condition is aggravated if the patient is not treated or if the treatment is improper or untimely.
