Hyperthyroidism is a disease in which the body’s oxidation process is accelerated and the metabolic rate is increased due to excessive secretion of thyroxine by the thyroid gland in the blood circulation. The main symptoms of hyperthyroidism include hypersensitivity, slight finger trembling, excitement, anger and panic, insomnia, tachycardia, fear of heat and sweating, excessive food and hunger, emaciation, fatigue, amenorrhea in women and impotence in men. On physical examination, patients may be found to have protruding eyes and diffuse enlargement of the thyroid gland. Treatment for hyperthyroidism is usually self-treatment at home, but in case of hyperthyroid crisis, hospitalization is required. Patients should pay attention to the following issues in the process of self-conditioning: Take medication on time and according to the dosage as prescribed by the doctor, do not stop taking medication or change the dosage at will. The symptoms are often aggravated by worries, emotional disturbances and nervousness. Therefore, patients with hyperthyroidism should pay attention to the regulation of emotions, cultivate the body and mind, do not get angry when things happen, meditate and recuperate, often listen to elegant and beautiful music, cultivate the habit of planting flowers, fish and birds, etc., in order to enjoy the emotions, quiet the mind and gradually eliminate mental symptoms. Family members and colleagues should also sympathize and comfort, understand and care, and avoid direct conflicts. Combination of work and rest: During the onset of the disease, the patient should be properly rested in bed. The resting environment should be quiet and the air should be circulated. Those who are mildly ill can get out of bed and do light activities without feeling fatigue, and they should not do too much housework. When the disease is stable, should participate in some useful activities, work, to regulate the pleasure of life, but should not be overworked, and should not be long-term rest. Diet taboos: smoking and alcohol can make patients excited, agitated, even irritable, rapid heartbeat, will aggravate the disease, need to quit smoking and alcohol. Coffee, strong tea and other stimulating foods are prohibited to minimize the patient’s overexcitement. The basal metabolic rate of hyperthyroidism increases and energy consumption increases, so a diet with high calories, high vitamins, sufficient protein and sugar starch should be the main food. Protein is generally not less than 1.5g per kg of body weight per day and should be mainly liver, fish, eggs, poultry and soy products. Eat more fresh vegetables and fruits, as well as milk, fish and shrimp with more calcium to supplement the calcium deficiency caused by hyperthyroidism. Try to eat less or no iodine-containing foods, such as seaweed and nori. Foods containing iodine are not conducive to the improvement of hyperthyroidism symptoms. Drink more tea and water: Hyperthyroidism patients are prone to lack of water in their bodies due to accelerated basal metabolism and increased sweating, therefore, hyperthyroidism patients should drink more water, 1500-3000ml per day, to replenish the water lost due to excessive sweating. This can increase the excitement and agitation of hyperthyroidism. Protect the eyes: Hyperthyroidism patients often have protruding eyes, which are prone to dryness and astringency. Elevate your head during sleep and apply eye ointment in appropriate amount for protection. Pregnancy: Generally speaking, pregnancy has no effect on hyperthyroidism, but the opinions of endocrinologists and obstetricians and gynecologists should be sought on whether pregnancy is possible. Regular check-ups: After the condition of hyperthyroidism has stabilized, patients should have regular check-ups at outpatient clinics to keep abreast of changes in their condition and to guide the use of medication.
