Diseases such as bronchopneumonia, bronchopleural fistula and lung abscesses can present with sputum, usually more in the early morning than in the evening, and the sputum can be divided into three layers after resting, with the upper layer being foamy, the middle layer being plasma or plasma-purulent material and the lower layer being fragments of necrotic tissue.
