Normally, after birth, the left atrium begins to close because of the increased pressure in the left atrium, and it usually closes completely after 6 months of life. If the foramen ovale does not close after 6 months of age but increases in size, this indicates a congenital heart condition, but there is no need to be nervous and you can follow up with your baby. This is because some babies can have their foramen ovale closed around one week of age. If the foramen ovale does not close, surgery may be considered. Minimally invasive surgery is currently available for symptomatic treatment.
