What type and size of pituitary tumor needs to be treated surgically now?

Surgery is the main treatment for pituitary tumors. The purpose of surgery is to relieve the compression of the tumor on visual afferent pathways and other tissue structures (including brain tissue, important nerves in the cavernous sinus and normal pituitary gland), restore hormone levels, and protect normal pituitary function. Clinically, regardless of the type of pituitary tumor, as long as the tumor compresses the surrounding tissues and produces clinical symptoms, surgery is indicated. In addition ACTH adenomas among pituitary microadenomas, GH adenomas that cannot tolerate pharmacological treatment, and PRL and GH adenomas that are intolerant or treatment insensitive can be treated surgically.
