After the middle of normal pregnancy, there will be varying degrees of lower limb oedema, which is caused by the enlarged uterus pressing on the pelvic veins causing impaired return to the lower limbs, but finger swelling is less common.
If a pregnant woman develops swollen fingers, suspect that it is due to gestosis, which is mostly seen in primiparous women and often occurs after 24 weeks of gestation. Pregnant women can develop mild oedema in the fingers and other parts of the body, or in severe cases, generalised oedema, which is caused by changes in endocrine function after pregnancy, increased capillary osmotic pressure and water and sodium retention.
