What is the McMurdo Spinotomy?

The progress of modern society has brought people rapid material and spiritual changes, but also silently brought some hidden health problems to our side. In recent years, with the increasing pressure of living, the change of diet structure, the pollution of social environment and other factors, the incidence of breast disease has been on the rise, which not only directly endangers the physical health of patients, but also psychologically brings worry and even panic to female patients, interfering with their lives from spiritual and cultural aspects. According to statistics, among all breast diseases, 50% are various breast tumors, and 3/4 of these benign tumors are breast fibroadenoma. The high incidence of breast fibroadenoma is from 18 to 40 years old, most of them are single, 20% to 30% are multiple, often located in different quadrants of both breasts or one side of the breast. Although breast fibroadenoma is a benign tumor, it is a pathological change that defies the normal physiological basis, and although its chance of malignancy is small, it is a hidden danger when left in the body, so surgery is the only effective way to treat the disease. For many years, open surgery has been used for the treatment of breast fibroadenoma, and this traditional surgery involves single or multiple incisions, leaving multiple scars on the surface of the breast. The main disadvantages are large incisions, excessive bleeding, aesthetic scars, and the possibility of damage to the milk ducts in young women, which can affect normal breastfeeding in the future. Many patients miss out on good treatment because of these concerns. The breast is the embodiment of female beauty, and in today’s society, which is increasingly pursuing the aesthetics of breast shape, the traditional surgical methods undoubtedly cannot meet the aesthetic requirements of female patients. With the further development of modern science and technology, the rise of humanized medical model and the update of treatment philosophy, the best treatment effect with minimal damage has become the goal pursued by breast surgeons in the 21st century. In such a medical atmosphere, our hospital introduced the latest Mammotome minimally invasive breast treatment system in 2007 and took the lead in minimally invasive breast surgery for fibroadenoma in Nantong area to cure the disease and maintain the aesthetic appearance of the breast at the same time. The procedure is performed under real-time ultrasound monitoring and navigation, using vacuum suction and rotary incision to remove one or more adenomas in the same or different parts of the same breast using only a two or three millimeter puncture point. The McMurdo spinotomy technique changes the traditional surgical path, with less painful removal of breast lesions, less intraoperative intervention of normal tissues, fewer postoperative complications, and a return to normal work life the next day, with the pinhole-like incision healing completely in two days without stitching. The procedure fully embodies the advantages of minimally invasive surgery, with almost no scar tissue remaining on the breast surface after surgery, which does not affect the patient’s sense of touch or future breastfeeding function at all. In addition, for patients with a high suspicion of malignant breast disease, a puncture biopsy can be performed with the McMurdo spinotomy system to clarify the diagnosis. The instrument is also suitable for the treatment of other diseases such as breast nodules, microscopic calcification of the breast, asymmetric density of the breast, and multifocal lesions of the breast. In today’s society, women have gradually participated in all walks of life and become the mainstream and elite of society, and a healthy body and mind is an indispensable element for them, and beautiful women play an increasingly important role in our increasingly beautiful times.
