There are no herbal remedies specifically for fatty liver. Fatty liver is usually treated with weight loss, lifestyle modification or medication depending on the condition. Fatty liver, or fatty liver disease, is a clinicopathological syndrome characterized by excessive fat storage and steatosis in hepatocytes. It can be divided into non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and alcoholic fatty liver disease. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with a variety of factors such as high-calorie diet, sugary beverages, sedentary lifestyle and obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and metabolic syndrome, etc. It can be further classified into simple fatty liver disease and steatohepatitis. Simple steatohepatopathy mainly needs to be treated for the cause of the disease, such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia need to treat the primary disease, generally no medication is needed, through weight loss and adjusting the lifestyle such as a healthy diet, physical exercise can improve the pathological changes in the liver cells. Steatohepatitis requires the use of some drugs such as vitamin E and polyene phosphatidylcholine to reduce lipid peroxidation on top of the treatment modality of simple fatty liver disease, regular review of liver function, and co-administration of liver-protecting drugs such as silymarin if necessary. Alcoholic fatty liver disease is caused by heavy drinking and can be divided into alcoholic fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis and/or liver fibrosis, and alcoholic cirrhosis. Its treatment begins with abstinence from alcohol and requires a high-calorie, high-protein, low-fat diet supplemented with multivitamins. Depending on the pathological state, drugs such as polyene phosphatidylcholine and metadoxine should be rationally applied to protect the liver and metabolize ethanol. Liver transplantation can be considered in severe cases. Patients with fatty liver should regularly review liver function and abdominal ultrasound, and follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
