In my previous article “What is the appropriate BP target value for renal hypertension”, I made a recommendation on the BP target value for hypertension caused by different diseases. There are several studies that show that in elderly hypertensive patients older than 65 years of age, the incidence of renal failure, myocardial infarction, and stroke decreases significantly when the BP target value is lower than 120/70 mmHg, which is good, but another bad thing is that the incidence of sudden death increases significantly. Therefore, we have to integrate several influencing factors for balanced consideration when determining the target value of blood pressure lowering for a patient in order to bring the maximum quality of life benefit to the patient.
