Currently, cancer incidence and mortality are increasing year by year, and it has become one of the most serious diseases threatening human health. Despite the use of multidisciplinary and comprehensive treatment methods in clinical practice, the efficacy is still not satisfactory. Nowadays, people are more and more deeply aware of the importance of Chinese medicine in the process of tumor prevention and treatment, and have taken Chinese medicine as one of the important methods to treat cancer. The mainstream method of cancer treatment in TCM is to “help the righteousness to cure cancer”. The formation of cancer is mainly due to the deficiency of righteousness and dysfunction of internal organs, which causes evil toxins to take advantage of the deficiency and accumulate in the meridians and internal organs, resulting in the dysregulation of yin and yang of the body and the dysfunction of qi and blood, leading to qi stagnation, blood stasis, phlegm coagulation and toxin gathering, and forming tumors over time. The method of “supporting the righteous” means regulating the body’s yin and yang, qi and blood, as well as the physiological functions of meridians and viscera, so as to give full play to the body’s inherent ability to resist diseases. However, is TCM treatment only suitable for patients with advanced cancer who cannot undergo surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy? Surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are all treatments aimed at destroying the tumor or reducing the tumor load. Although they may alleviate the disease to a certain extent, the adverse effects should not be ignored. Surgery and radiotherapy can deplete the body’s vitality, while chemotherapy is “good and bad”, which kills tumor cells as well as normal cells in the body, and has obvious toxic side effects. Even if the tumor can be controlled and shrunk to a certain extent, but because the body’s resistance (positive qi) is greatly damaged, it is often difficult to achieve satisfactory long-term results because of the death of the tumor. The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine points out that “the treatment of big poison, ten to its six, the treatment of regular poison, ten to its seven, the treatment of small poison, ten to its eight, the treatment of no poison, ten to its nine …… no make over it, hurt its righteousness”. It suggests that the treatment of cancer should not just attack the evil and avoid over-treatment. Chinese medicine, which helps to cure cancer, combined with surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, can precisely make up for the shortcomings of western medical treatment methods: 1. By nourishing the spleen and stomach, Chinese medicine can improve the patient’s constitution, improve the bone marrow hematopoietic function (such as raising white blood cells) and reduce the adverse effects of surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other therapies, thus giving cancer patients the opportunity to undergo surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other therapies, which is conducive to the patient’s smoother completion of The whole course of treatment. 2.Some supportive drugs have certain effect of killing cancer cells or have the effect of increasing the effectiveness and reducing the toxicity of radiotherapy. Therefore, Chinese medicine can participate in the whole cancer treatment process. If the patient has indications for surgery and needs further radiotherapy treatment, during the post-operative radiotherapy period, the method of benefiting Qi and nourishing blood, harmonizing the spleen and stomach is used to reduce the damage of radiotherapy to the patient; after the radiotherapy is finished, in order to prevent tumor recurrence and metastasis, the support of the righteous and attacking the evil are both emphasized to make the evil go away and the righteous return. We are currently carrying out a national clinical research base project: “A randomized double-blind clinical study on the effect of Chinese medicine combined with chemotherapy on postoperative survival quality and long-term survival of non-small cell lung cancer”, which will provide scientific evidence for the application of Chinese medicine in the treatment of early and mid-stage cancer patients. TCM can be used not only for cancer patients with different clinical stages, but also for cancer patients with different types of disease. In clinical application, TCM practitioners follow the principle of “diagnosis and treatment”, grasp the yin and yang of the patient’s internal organs and blood, take into account the clinical stage of the tumor and the current Western medical treatment methods, and provide a “tailor-made” treatment plan for each patient. For example, the treatment of lung cancer is based on “benefitting qi and nourishing yin”, stomach cancer is based on “strengthening the spleen”, and breast cancer is based on “nourishing yin and warming the kidney and regulating the flush”. On the one hand, it inhibits the growth of tumor and adjusts the body’s yin and yang to a harmonious state; on the other hand, it improves the patient’s survival quality and prolongs the survival time. The classic of Chinese medicine “Huang Di Nei Jing” says: “Poison to attack evil, five grains for nourishment, five animals for benefit, five fruits for help, five vegetables for enrichment”, which is an important guidance for treatment and health care. There are two levels of meaning here: 1, the treatment of disease (attacking evil) requires the use of drugs. The so-called “poison” to attack the evil is not a toxic product in the general sense, but a drug with yin and yang bias. The cause of the disease is due to the imbalance of yin and yang, the treatment of disease should be used to correct the imbalance of yin and yang in the human body, with the cold, hot, warm, cool drugs to promote the body back to the harmonious state of yin and yang secret. Therefore, it is necessary to use drugs to cure diseases, and doctors who are professionally trained in Chinese medicine theory and medicinal effects are needed to help achieve this. 2.Disease recuperation needs to pay attention to dietary supplements, and cancer patients are no exception. Staple foods such as beans and cereals are necessary sources of nutrition for the human body, while animal protein, fruits and vegetables are supplements to dietary nutrition. We suggest that the selection of fruits and vegetables should be in accordance with the seasons, and it is better to consume seasonal fruits and seasonal vegetables to supplement the nutrition needed by human body. 3. Since cancer patients develop disease due to the imbalance of yin and yang, it is appropriate to avoid foods that are too cold or too hot, such as dog meat and mutton, which are hot in nature, and sea crabs and lake crabs, which are cold in nature.
