The thyroid gland is a gland located on both sides of the trachea and resembles the human ear. Hyperthyroidism, or hyperthyroidism, is a common disease of the thyroid gland. It is mainly due to the enlargement of the thyroid gland, which secretes excessive amounts of thyroxine, causing the patient to lose weight, eat too much, and become irritable. At present, there are three main methods to treat hyperthyroidism. First, medication, which mainly involves taking anti-thyroid drugs. This method has a low cure rate, can only control the symptoms, and usually requires long-term medication. Second, canonical 131 treatment, canonical 131 is a kind of radioactive element, after entering the body can destroy the thyroid tissue, reduce the secretion of thyroxine. The cure rate of this method can reach 70%, but because canonical 131 is a radioactive element, its potential carcinogenicity cannot be ruled out, and the chance of causing lifelong hypothyroidism is very high. Thirdly, surgical treatment, subtotal thyroidectomy can achieve a cure rate of over 95% for hyperthyroidism, and can also restore the thickened neck. However, the surgery is more traumatic and leaves a long surgical scar on the neck, which greatly affects the aesthetics. With the advancement of science and technology, it is now possible to use minimally invasive techniques to remove the thyroid gland, which can achieve the same treatment effect as traditional surgery, while being less invasive and beautiful in appearance. The main method is to make three tiny incisions of 5-10 mm in the areola or armpit and use specially designed surgical instruments to reach the neck through the skin and remove the thyroid gland, which usually takes less than 2 hours. Because of the high technical difficulty of minimally invasive thyroidectomy and the need for special equipment, it is currently performed in only a few hospitals with the necessary facilities, and some surgeons still have different opinions about it. As this technique becomes more popular, minimally invasive techniques will certainly become the main method of treating hyperthyroidism.
