The guidelines for the treatment of hypertension define hypertension as a systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg and/or a diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg without antihypertensive medication. The number of people with hypertension in China is estimated to be nearly 100 million. It not only damages important organs such as heart, brain and kidney, but is also an important risk factor for atherosclerosis. The prevalence of hypertension in China is notable for the phenomenon of “three highs and three lows”. That is: high prevalence, high disability rate and high mortality rate of hypertension, low awareness rate, low medication rate and low control rate. The cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events caused by damage to the end target organs of the heart, brain and kidney due to hypertension have seriously affected the quality of life and are called “silent killers”. In response, the Chinese Ministry of Health has proposed October 8 each year as Hypertension Day in China, and asked residents over 35 years old to have their blood pressure checked at least once a year.
