How long can you live on a ventilator?

The exact length of life on a ventilator is closely related to the patient’s specific condition and general condition, and does not necessarily mean that the disease is advanced. The main purpose of a ventilator is to help the patient breathe when the patient’s own breathing cannot sustain his or her own oxygen consumption. If the abdominal organs are damaged due to trauma and a ventilator is required, and there is no significant damage to the lungs, the patient can be taken off the ventilator when the abdominal organs have recovered to achieve healing, which may take tens of days or months. If the trauma results in intracranial damage, the patient may be able to survive for a long time with the assistance of a ventilator, but may be in a vegetative state. If the patient has severe cardiopulmonary dysfunction combined with a severe infection in the lungs, he or she may only last 3-5 or 7-10 days with ventilator support. In addition, patients need to have their breathing masks and tubes cleaned regularly while on the ventilator.
