Does secretory otitis media cause eardrum perforation?

Secretory otitis media does not usually lead to eardrum perforation. Secretory otitis media is a non-purulent inflammatory disease of the middle ear characterized by conductive deafness and tympanic effusion, and can be classified as acute or chronic. This disease is also known as exudative otitis media, non-suppurative otitis media, cicatricial otitis media, plasma otitis media, plasma mucous otitis media, middle ear effusion, glue ear and so on. The main clinical manifestations are hearing loss, ear pain, tinnitus, and ear stuffiness. Some secretory otitis media may develop into adhesive otitis media, tympanosclerosis, cholesterol granuloma and acquired primary middle ear cholesteatoma, etc., but tympanic membrane perforation will not occur. Secretory otitis media should be treated regularly as prescribed by the doctor.
