Recently, some parents of children have told me that they can buy used nasal molds relatively cheaply through online or WeChat group transfer of used nasal molds. I was very shocked and worried about this because used nasal molds can cause a lot of harm to the children. Perhaps it was the kindness of the patient’s parents to help each other in friendship and transfer their child’s used nose molds to other children who had cleft lip surgery at a low price. Unbeknownst to them, such kindness is a serious violation of medical norms and can easily cause cross infection and serious consequences. The nose mold is a silicone product, which is a low density polymer material with a large number of pores, easily adsorbing and residing bacteria in the nasal cavity of the former user, as well as germs in the blood after surgery, which cannot be sterilized by ordinary washing, and there is a risk of cross infection and transmission. Other potential hazards are unpredictable. What’s more, most of the groups using nasal molds are mainly newborns and infants, whose resistance is already low, and children who have just undergone surgery, whose resistance is even lowered, are prone to infections. We know that used syringes should not be reused and the same applies to nasal molds. Who knows if the nasal molds we accept for transfer are second-hand, third-hand, or even fourth-hand? The unknown nature of the germs that may remain in a mold that has been used by multiple children is terrifying! Professor Fu warns parents not to let their children use second-hand nasal molds.
