Tips for Lupus Nephritis

  1. Is lupus hereditary? Is it contagious? The incidence of lupus is related to heredity. The incidence rate of close relatives of lupus patients is 5-12%, and the incidence rate of identical twins can be as high as 23-69%. However, it does not mean that if a parent has lupus nephritis, the child will definitely get the same disease, only that it is more likely to develop the disease than others. Lupus nephritis itself is not contagious, and close contact with lupus patients will not be contagious. 2. What indicators indicate that lupus is still active? There are many indicators to determine the activity of lupus, which should be combined with clinical manifestations and laboratory tests to make a comprehensive judgment. Clinically, there are fever, arthralgia, rash, hair loss, the presence of significant hematuria, massive proteinuria, rapid deterioration of renal function, significant worsening of anemia and reduction of WBC. Laboratory tests see multiple positive autoantibodies or elevated titers, increased hypocomplementemia, and elevated cryoglobulins. Renal biopsy shows crescentic nephritis and massive cellular infiltration. All these indicate that the disease is active. 3. Is kidney biopsy necessary for lupus patients? Kidney biopsy in lupus patients is very important because an important basis for clinical selection of treatment plan is the pathological type and characteristics of pathological changes of lupus nephritis. Since the pathological type of lupus nephritis will transform to other types after treatment or as the disease progresses. Therefore, in the case of lupus recurrence or significant aggravation of the disease, repeat kidney biopsy is required. 4. Why should lupus patients not take tonic medicines such as ginseng and cinnamon? Lupus nephritis is an autoimmune disease and various immunosuppressive drugs are given during treatment. If supplements such as ginseng and cinnamon are taken to enhance the patient’s resistance, in other words, the immune response is enhanced and the lupus activity will be aggravated instead.
