Current Status of Chronic Diseases in China

Chinese authoritative experts have reached the following consensus on the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases: chronic diseases seriously damage national health, threaten the workforce and increase the disease burden substantially, and have become a major livelihood issue that concerns the whole situation, which, if left unchecked, will affect the construction of a harmonious society and hinder social stability and sustainable economic development. Chronic diseases can be prevented and controlled, and strengthening the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases is not only the responsibility of individuals and families, but also the responsibility of society as a whole, and the responsibility of the government. In the face of the serious challenge of preventing and controlling chronic diseases, it is necessary to mobilize the power of the whole society, with government-led, departmental cooperation and universal participation, to reverse the high prevalence of chronic diseases as soon as possible. The consensus is based on the following scientific evidence: a. Chronic diseases, represented by cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases, are by far the most important public health problems in the world. 57 million people died of chronic diseases in 2008, accounting for 63% of all deaths, and it is expected to rise to 75% in 2030, and about a quarter of chronic disease-related deaths worldwide occur in About a quarter of global chronic disease-related deaths occur in people under 60 years of age in the workforce. Second, deaths due to chronic diseases in China already account for 85% of all deaths, with cerebrovascular disease, cancer, respiratory disease and heart disease ranking among the top four causes of death in both urban and rural areas. 45% of patients with chronic diseases die before the age of 70, and premature deaths due to chronic diseases account for 75% of all premature deaths nationwide. Third, China has more than 200 million hypertensive patients, 120 million obese patients, 97 million diabetic patients, and 33 million hypercholesterolemic patients, of which more than 65% are in the labor force aged 18-59. Risk factors associated with chronic diseases are prevalent in the population, 300 million people smoke, 80% of households have excessive per capita salt and cooking oil intake, and less than 12% of adults over 18 years of age regularly participate in physical exercise. Fourth, the disease burden caused by chronic diseases accounts for 70% of the total disease burden in China. If strong measures are not taken, the number of patients with major chronic diseases among people over 40 years old in China will increase by one to two times in the next 20 years, and the burden caused by chronic diseases will increase by more than 80%.
