Specialist treatment for tumors should be early

As an oncology specialist physician, I often hear patients’ families’ complaints in my work: “Doctor, we have taken a detour, if only we had come earlier.” Such a phenomenon is not an isolated case, but a more common phenomenon in current oncology treatment, which reflects certain problems. As we all know, if you have diarrhea, you should go to gastroenterology, if you have panic, you should go to cardiovascular department, if you have back pain, you should go to orthopedic department, but how many patients who have tumor will think of oncology. Even if they have tumor, the first doctor they think of is not oncologist. There are many reasons for this abnormal phenomenon, either the patients and their families do not know that there are tumor specialists, or the families do not want to let the patients know that they have tumor, or the specialist treatment of tumor is not yet known to the public. Oncology is currently a specialized discipline like gastroenterology, respiratory and cardiovascular medicine. Because of the strong specialization of oncology, the state has started a training program for oncology specialists, and the concept of specialized treatment has been incorporated into the examination for primary care physicians. Due to the limitation of specialty, many clinicians lack professional knowledge of oncology treatment and do not have the concept of professional treatment. As a result, many patients do not get the best treatment arrangement and the best treatment effect. In developed countries, tumor patients will get treatment guidance including oncology, surgery, pathology, imaging and radiotherapy together before treatment, so as to make more reasonable treatment plan. Due to many objective reasons, most of the hospitals in China cannot do this, and most of them have a “single-player” treatment mode, and in many cases, it is a situation of “whoever encounters first is treated first”. In the face of this complex tumor treatment situation, it is still far from the goal of “patient-centered and individualized treatment”. In order to maximize the benefits of treatment for patients, multidisciplinary consultation for patients and their families is necessary. We also often ask patients to undergo specialized consultations such as surgery and radiotherapy before treatment in order to obtain the best treatment plan. Therefore, we also recommend oncology patients and their family members to visit oncology department for professional consultation when tumor is suspected. The advice from oncologists will surely help you so that patients can get the best professional and comprehensive treatment as early as possible.
