What is a high blood pressure headache?

Patients with hypertension often experience headaches, and they are often the first and most common symptom of hypertension. There are several possible causes of hypertensive headache: The first is due to the mechanical effect of hypertension, which causes abnormal dilation of blood vessels and stimulation of nociceptive receptors in the arterial wall causing headache, manifesting dull head pain, throbbing throbbing pain, confined to one or both sides of the front and back of the head, or may diffuse to the whole head, which is non-migrainous vascular headache. The second type is due to reflex contraction of head muscles and tight band-like pain around the head, mostly located in the neck under the occiput, with mild neck strength. The third kind is due to brain dysfunction, which causes diastolic disorder of intracranial blood vessels, producing diffuse distension and dull pain of the whole head. All of these factors can cause headaches in patients with hypertension. Another more serious condition is that hypertension can cause the formation of microangiomas in the intracranial arteries, which can easily rupture and cause cerebral hemorrhage when the blood pressure is too high or fluctuates significantly. For hypertensive headache, first of all, blood pressure should be actively and steadily controlled, medication should be taken regularly, reasonable antihypertensive drugs should be selected according to the specific situation of blood pressure, and blood pressure should be monitored frequently and medication should be adjusted according to the level of blood pressure control. You should not stop the medication at will when there is no symptom or the blood pressure is stable, because stopping the medication at will is more likely to cause cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. In life, you should also pay attention to a light diet, avoid greasy food, be sure to eliminate smoking and alcohol, do not stay up late, more exercise, these measures are helpful for blood pressure control. For patients with high blood pressure, you should never judge your blood pressure by whether you have a headache or not, you must take your antihypertensive medication regularly under the guidance of your doctor.
