What is the stinging of the eyes?

Eye stinging is a painful pinprick-like condition in the eye due to various causes. There are many causes, such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, corneal foreign bodies, corneal scratches, conjunctival stones, etc. Stabbing pain in the eye caused by conjunctivitis is mainly due to inflammation that stimulates the sensory nerve endings in the conjunctival tissue, causing a painful response. Conjunctival stones are also a common cause of eye stinging pain. The deposition of ocular metabolites in the conjunctival tissue, combined with inflammation, leads to the formation of stones. If the conjunctival stones are located under the conjunctiva, there is usually no discomfort, but when they protrude from the conjunctival surface and irritate the cornea, this can cause stinging pain in the eye. The pain is more intense due to keratitis, and the simultaneous occurrence of pain, tearing and photophobia is known as “corneal irritation”. Corneal foreign bodies are also a common clinical condition. The principle of corneal foreign bodies causing eye stinging pain is similar to that of conjunctival stones, in that the foreign body is embedded in the corneal surface tissue and causes irritation of the cornea, resulting in eye stinging pain. Because of the abundance of nerve endings in the corneal tissue, it is often said that “no sand is allowed in the eye” because the cornea is very sensitive to perception. In another case, after a trauma to the cornea without a foreign body, before the cornea is completely healed, the nerve endings are exposed, especially when blinking, and the eyelid rubs against the wound, then a severe stinging sensation occurs. In summary, there are many causes of eye stinging pain, mainly due to inflammation, foreign bodies, and trauma.
