Purulent exudate from pelvic inflammatory disease accumulating in the rectal fossa of the uterus can form a fossa uteri. A fossa uteri accumulation is one of the evidences for the diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease, but a fossa uteri accumulation is not necessarily caused by pelvic inflammatory disease.
