How long to stop taking medication for reflux esophagitis

The course of treatment for reflux esophagitis varies from person to person. The general course of treatment takes 4-8 weeks during the active phase, after which you can choose to take medication on demand or maintenance treatment according to your condition. If you take oral proton pump inhibitors, you may take them orally for 2-3 days, and the symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn may no longer appear, but you have to take medication for 4 weeks during the active phase according to the course of treatment, so that the erosion and ulceration of the esophageal mucosa may heal completely. Therefore, when using the medication, you cannot adjust the medication time by yourself according to the symptoms. Clinically, many patients take the medication and the symptoms disappear and feel cured, so they stop the medication by themselves, but they relapse soon after stopping the medication, so it is required to follow the course of treatment generally for 4-8 weeks. For severe reflux esophagitis, recurrent attacks after stopping the medication, or patients with esophageal ulcers, it may take at least 8 weeks later, and maintenance therapy is also required. The duration of maintenance therapy varies from person to person depending on the condition, but in principle, the lowest dose until no symptoms appear is required to maintain therapy. For mild reflux esophagitis, the medication can be discontinued after 8 weeks, and if heartburn or reflux symptoms occur again after discontinuation, the medication can be taken as needed, i.e., when discomfort occurs.
