Perianal itching in children can be caused by pinworm infection due to accidental swallowing or inhalation of pinworm eggs. Pinworms can be present on surfaces such as food, drinks, fingers, toys or bed linen for two to three weeks. In the case of diapered toddlers, nappy dermatitis or fungal infections need to be ruled out.
