Patients need to visit the ENT department as soon as possible after noticing hearing loss, to identify the cause and type of hearing loss. An otoscopy is recommended to help determine the condition of the external ear canal and eardrum. If it is caused by cerumen embolism, it is recommended that hearing can be restored after the cerumen is cleared. Patients need to have a systematic audiological test, which can be done for pure tone audiometry, acoustic conductance, auditory brainstem evoked potentials, and multi-frequency steady-state examination, which will help determine the degree and type of hearing loss. Patients also need to have a middle ear mastoid CT, which is mainly to clarify the presence of middle and inner ear related diseases. An MRI of the head will be done to detect any intracranial disease that may be causing the hearing loss. Once the patient’s condition is clear, he or she can undergo targeted treatment. Some patients may choose medication, some may need to wear hearing aids, and a few may need to consider cochlear implant surgery.
