Acupuncture with low-dose isotretinoin for moderate-to-severe acne

According to Chinese medicine, the onset of acne is due to heat in the lungs and stomach, which can steam up the face, or due to external invasion of wind-heat, or due to dietary preferences, excessive consumption of spicy, fatty and sweet foods, dampness and heat in the spleen and stomach, which can become toxic after a long period of time, with heat and toxicity overflowing on the surface of the muscle. Treatment is based on a combination of Chinese and Western medicine, with the identification of acupuncture points to remove wind and heat and unblock qi and blood. The walking jar to soothe the meridians and the blood pricking and cupping method to clear heat and swelling, activate blood circulation and remove blood stasis have been effective; oral isotretinoin can inhibit or remove drug-resistant Propionibacterium acnes and rarely induce drug resistance in Propionibacterium acnes. It also inhibits the formation of superoxide and enzyme activity, thus having an anti-inflammatory effect. During the treatment period, patients are instructed to get enough sleep and maintain a relaxed mood. The treatment started to take effect in 1 week with the reduction of inflammation, and in 2 weeks the oil secretion was reduced and the inflammation subsided, and by 6 weeks the effect was obvious, and satisfactory results were obtained in 8-12 weeks, with an effective rate of 96.9% after 12 weeks of treatment. The study showed that the use of evidence-based acupuncture with small doses of isotretinoin for the treatment of moderate and severe acne achieved fast onset and satisfactory results, while reducing the side effects of isotretinoin and significantly reducing the recurrence rate.
