Is there a high recurrence rate of pituitary tumors?

Pituitary tumor recurrence rates are still high. The recurrence rate varies among different types of pituitary tumors, for example, the recurrence rate of lactational adenoma is about 40% at 5 years after surgery; the recurrence rate of growth hormone adenoma is about 13% after surgery. For pituitary tumor recurrence cases, regular review and follow-up should be emphasized, and regular long-term and standardized follow-up should be performed at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and then annually after surgery. Because of early detection of recurrent tumor, early intervention can be taken. The intervention is mainly based on re-surgical treatment, and post-operative radiotherapy is recommended routinely. In case of third recurrence, radiotherapy is also required immediately after surgery.
