With the change of people’s living habits, the change of living environment and the prolongation of the average life expectancy of human beings, the prevalence of malignant tumors is getting higher and higher and the onset of the disease is also getting younger and younger. The high lethality of malignant tumors also makes them the first cause of death from diseases at present. Cancer has become a frequent and common disease among diseases, how should we look at it? First of all, cancer is not an incurable disease, and suffering from cancer does not necessarily mean that it is “sentenced to death”. With the development of science and technology, human beings have a more detailed and in-depth knowledge of cancer, and its treatment is becoming more and more perfect. At present, many malignant tumors can be completely cured: such as early breast cancer, stomach cancer, intestinal cancer and other malignant tumors, through surgical resection, postoperative regular chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and long-term use of traditional Chinese medicine to regulate, can completely achieve the purpose of controlling the tumor and long-term survival. At present, we can see a lot of such patients in the clinic, who have not seen tumor recurrence after 5 years or even more than 10 years, especially breast cancer patients, most of them are still stable. And some patients who are found relatively late at the onset of the disease are not drug-free. At present, the treatment concept of cancer has changed a lot: cancer can now be regarded as a chronic disease, such as hypertension, diabetes, etc., and through various treatments, tumors can be controlled for a long period of time, with the purpose of tumor survival. The progress of science can certainly make it realized, such as the current targeted therapy research in recent years, which makes the control rate of lung cancer patients, the survival of patients has been significantly improved, and great progress has been made in the treatment. With the passage of time, we believe that such progress is getting faster and faster. Secondly, how do we look at the treatment of cancer? For cancer treatment we have a popular clinical phrase: individualized treatment under standardized guidance. For different cancers in the clinic, we have different means of treatment. For example, breast cancer requires surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and some of the patients also need endocrine therapy and long-term medication; while for prostate cancer patients, most of them can be well controlled by endocrine therapy only. Therefore, the treatment programs for different cancers are not the same. Moreover, cancer treatment is a systematic treatment, which requires multidisciplinary cooperation among surgery, internal medicine, radiotherapy, etc. Because of the needs of the condition, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy may be chosen; and the order, timing and mutual cooperation of various treatments are all subject to certain requirements, which are the standardization of treatment. Therefore, we suggest that tumor patients should choose oncology specialties when seeking medical treatment, which is more conducive to the development of standardized and systematic treatment for patients. For the same cancer patient, due to the different stages at the time of onset, different pathological types, different physique, age and so on, the treatment plan given to the patient is not the same, and individual treatment is needed. This is similar to the traditional Chinese medicine’s diagnosis and treatment, where different treatments are given to patients according to their different conditions, so as to achieve the most appropriate treatment for each patient. For example, for lung cancer patients, we will firstly classify them into small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer according to the pathological types of lung cancer cells. According to the pathological characteristics of tumor cells, for small cell lung cancer, due to its easy to metastasize characteristics, even if it is clinically staged as early stage, it will not be selected for surgical resection, but preferred chemotherapy as the main treatment and systemic treatment. Because past clinical statistics show that only 5% of small cell lung cancer patients with early stage can be completely resected through surgery, and there is no significant improvement in the survival of patients. Comparing with non-small cell lung cancer patients, patients with earlier stage can have their survival significantly improved through surgery and postoperative treatment, and even some of them are cured, so this kind of patients is the first choice for surgery. Moreover, we will also formulate treatment according to the specific conditions of patients. For some patients with poor physique and old age, we do not even recommend radiotherapy, and they are treated with traditional Chinese medicine, which can also improve the quality of survival and prolong the survival time. All these are individualized treatment of cancer. Through the above introduction, we expect people to have a certain understanding of cancer, and hope that cancer patients will not be afraid of it, let alone give up lightly, and set up the confidence of overcoming it, and through the full cooperation with doctors, we can overcome it.
