Pleural effusion in tuberculous pleurisy is treated with medication, as well as thoracentesis or closed drainage of the chest cavity, along with enhanced support for the patient’s nutritional status. In pure tuberculous pleurisy, the pleural effusion is quickly absorbed, usually in about 1 month. In cases of TB pleurisy combined with infection, abscess chest or pleural fluid compartment, in such cases the absorption of the pleural fluid may be affected, and even in patients with thicker pus or more severe compartment, surgical treatment, i.e., abscess chest removal and pleural fibrous plate debridement, may be required. In conclusion, most patients with TB pleural effusion in TB pleurisy can soon disappear if treated promptly. It usually takes about 1 month, possibly less, and there are individual patients who may take a little longer.
