Prevention and treatment of visual fatigue

Visual fatigue is a syndrome in which self-conscious symptoms such as eye swelling, headache, dizziness, orbital swelling and pain and organic factors of the eye or the body intertwine with mental (psychological) factors after prolonged vision. Visual fatigue can produce a certain degree of visual impairment or a series of eye discomfort. Visual fatigue can manifest as pain around the eyes and orbits, blurred vision, dry eyes, tearing, and even headache, nausea, dizziness and other discomforts. Visual fatigue can also lead to deepening myopia, double vision, easy serial reading, and inability to concentrate, which can affect people’s learning and work efficiency. If visual fatigue is not improved for a long time, it will cause vision loss, advance the age of presbyopia, etc., and in serious cases, it will also lead to various eye diseases. In recent years, with the change of information exchange and work, study and life rhythm accelerated, eye load increased, the trend of gradually increasing the number of patients with visual fatigue in the population. This trend is especially evident among people who use visual/videodisplayterminal (VDT) such as computers, TVs, monitors, and video game consoles, because of the special effects of the environment on visual function. It has been reported that 10-15% of subjects who underwent routine eye examinations complained of headaches and visual fatigue related to computer work, and about 33.5% of VDT operators complained of visual fatigue, with an increasing trend. Therefore, visual fatigue has received widespread attention in people’s daily life. Visual fatigue is a syndrome caused by multiple intertwined factors, and its causes include environmental factors, ocular factors, physical factors and mental factors, and is not an independent eye disease. Environmental factors such as insufficient or too strong light, uneven distribution of light sources or flickering, too small, too fine or unstable targets, indistinct contrast between the object of gaze and the background, unstable movement of the object of work, prolonged gaze and so on. It is especially important to point out that: long time gazing or operating the flickering fluorescent screen of computer, TV, game console, etc. in daily life is an important reason for modern people to have visual fatigue. Physical factors include suffering from certain diseases, such as infectious diseases, endocrine disorders, cervical spondylosis, or physical weakness, overwork, etc. Some patients are under long-term tension and stress, physically and mentally exhausted, the body’s immunity is reduced, and even anxiety, sensitivity and plant nerve dysfunction, resulting in insufficient regulation of the eyes and the occurrence of visual fatigue. Eye factors include: 1, adjustment abnormalities: uncorrected or improperly corrected refractive errors (including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism) and presbyopia are the main causes of visual fatigue, the patient’s brain must use too much regulation in order to get clear vision, and it is easy to visual fatigue occurs after a short period of concentrated eye use. Myopic eyes also need more convergence when looking at near objects, thus increasing the burden on the internal rectus muscle and causing visual fatigue. 2, eye muscle balance malfunction: strabismus patients need to pass the “corrective fusion reflex” when looking at objects in order to keep the eye in the right position, so it can cause visual fatigue. 3, abnormal pupil size, pupil distance, dry eyes, etc., can cause visual fatigue. The way to prevent and cure is to “nourish” Although visual fatigue is a multi-factor complex disease, however, in the same environment, not everyone has the disease, and the degree of the disease is not the same, so in many causative factors, individual factors play an important role. The comprehensive prevention and treatment of visual fatigue should not only focus on improving patients’ living habits, study and work environment, but also on individual factors. Visual fatigue is called liver strain in Chinese medicine. The etiology of the disease is attributed to long-viewing strain on the heart and mind, depletion of qi and blood, astringency of the meridians in the eyes; liver and kidney essence and blood deficiency, tendon loss of nourishment, regulation failure; or spleen qi weakness, weakness of transportation and transformation, eyes loss of moistening and so on. For deficiency of qi and blood, the treatment should be to nourish qi and blood, nourish the heart and calm the mind. Herbs: Dihuang, Angelica, Tianmaidong, Yuan Zhi, Wu Wei Zi, Chai Hu, Ge Ge Gen, etc. If the liver and kidney are deficient, nourish the liver and kidney to benefit the essence and brighten the eyes. Due to the existence of individual differences, Chinese medicine treatment emphasizes the identification of evidence and focuses on individualized treatment. Through reasonable traditional Chinese medicine, it can not only eliminate the symptoms of visual fatigue, but also strengthen the body, improve the body’s resistance, enhance memory, and effectively improve the efficiency of work and study. Visual fatigue is not terrible, but if people do not know enough about it, do not pay enough attention to it or even do not care about it, and if visual fatigue is not recovered for a long time, then it will definitely damage people’s eyes and even physical and mental health. Only by caring for the eyes, paying attention to visual fatigue, avoiding and eliminating visual fatigue, can we keep our eyes, the window of the soul, bright and clear.
