Pain in the back of the head in patients with hypertension is mainly caused by cerebral vascular spasm due to high blood pressure. If it is cerebral vascular spasm, while actively controlling blood pressure, drugs such as flunarizine can be taken to soothe blood vessels and improve headache symptoms. If severe headache cannot be relieved, along with nausea and vomiting, attention should be paid to whether it is hypertensive encephalopathy. If the patient’s blood pressure is very high and it is determined to be hypertensive encephalopathy, strong antihypertensive measures should be taken and antihypertensive drugs, like sodium nitroprusside, should be used intravenously. In addition, patients with headache should pay attention to whether there is a possibility of cerebrovascular accident, and CT examination of the head must be performed to clarify whether there is cerebral hemorrhage and other conditions. In particular, subarachnoid hemorrhage can cause pain in the back of the head, so patients should be promptly hospitalized in case of cerebrovascular accident.
