Normal range of amniotic fluid index

Amniotic fluid is a clear, colorless liquid that surrounds the baby and protects the fetus from external forces, while participating in the fetal metabolism. The amniotic fluid index is the main indicator to assess the normal amount of amniotic fluid, which is useful to monitor the health of the fetus in the uterus. The normal value of the amniotic fluid index is between 8.0 and 18.0 cm. An amniotic fluid index between 18.0-20.0 cm is considered excessive amniotic fluid and greater than 20.0 cm is considered excessive amniotic fluid. An amniotic fluid index between 5.0-8.0 cm is low amniotic fluid, and less than 5.0 cm is too little amniotic fluid. The general measurement of amniotic fluid volume is an important indicator to assess whether the pregnancy is normal or not. When there is too much amniotic fluid, pregnant women are prone to complications of gestational hypertension, premature rupture of membranes, abnormal fetal position and increased incidence of preterm delivery. Such pregnant women need to ensure a low-salt diet and reduce the amount of water they drink. She should rest in bed and take a left-sided position to improve the circulation of the uterus and placenta and prevent preterm delivery. When it is found that the amniotic fluid is too low but the fetus is developing normally, we should look for and remove the cause of the disease, which can be done by increasing the amount of rehydration, improving the placental function and anti-infection. Pregnant women should usually monitor by counting fetal movements and counting on their own, and doctors should perform fetal biophysical scoring. Electronic fetal monitoring should also be performed to closely monitor the fetus in utero. If the amniotic fluid is too low and combined with other abnormalities, appropriate treatment needs to be given and, if necessary, the pregnancy needs to be terminated.
