In clinical practice, we often see that when a patient is diagnosed with cancer, family members often panic and almost all of them are faced with the dilemma of whether to tell the patient the truth or not. Many family members choose to conceal it and do not go to oncology hospitals or oncology departments for more professional treatment in order not to let the patient know the condition, which directly affects the treatment effect. According to our years of clinical experience in oncology, in fact, most of the tumor patients who are psychologically healthy have a much stronger tolerance ability than we expected, although they will have intense emotional fluctuations when they first know their disease, most of them can gradually accept the reality. Therefore, we advocate to master the time and method according to patients’ psychological quality, personality characteristics and education level, etc. It is better to inform patients of their diagnosis and then analyze their condition together with them, so that they can build up confidence and actively cooperate with the treatment, which will achieve the best treatment effect. In the process of tumor treatment, besides enduring the adverse reactions brought by anti-tumor treatment, patients are also worried about becoming a burden to their families or friends, about not being cured or not getting any meaningful results, so the care and support from family members are especially important at such time. Firstly, psychological comfort and unfailing care in life should be provided. It should be understood that cancer is not contagious and patients must not be made to feel lonely and disliked; secondly, during the treatment process, family members should communicate more with patients and infect them with optimism to make them understand that cancer is not terrible and anti-tumor treatment is meaningful. If patients are found to be anxious and depressed, they should tell the medical staff in time. The medical staff will actively cooperate with the family members to find ways to solve the problems arising from the patients, and psychologists will be invited to intervene if necessary. Finally, family members should communicate more with doctors, actively participate in the discussion of treatment plan, and cooperate with doctors for examination and treatment on time, all of which will play an important role in the efficacy of tumor treatment.
