Just a sneeze, but a fracture

The day before yesterday, in the orthopedic ward of Rui Kang Hospital affiliated with Guangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 68-year-old grandmother Zhang had just completed a minimally invasive surgery. The hospitalization + surgery was caused by a sneeze: she sneezed after a series of cold, her back waist “clicked” and a compression fracture occurred in the thoracic vertebra. “Back pain and leg cramps” is how older people describe their bodies. Once this condition occurs, many people generally believe that it is normal for them to be older. However, experts point out that the source of this symptom is “osteoporosis”. If you have an itchy nose to sneeze, it is best to prepare in advance, “straighten your back and open your mouth wide” to reduce the power of the sneeze. Typical cases of bus emergency braking, waist straight can not afford last Tuesday, live in Star Avenue, Auntie He took a bus to Tamura market to buy food. When she got on the bus, there were no empty seats, and there were only two stops, so 62-year-old Auntie He stood in the middle of the bus. The bus traveled to the intersection, in order to avoid an electric car suddenly a sharp braking, because of the unpreparedness, Auntie He body did not stand still, was heavily flashed. After returning home, Auntie He felt painful chest congestion, no appetite for food and sleep, and the next day she even had to be supported by her partner to go to the toilet. Initially, I thought it was a back flash, so I kept rubbing medicinal wine on the painful area, but the pain was not reduced. So, her partner took her to the hospital to take pictures. As a result, the cause of Auntie He’s back pain was actually a compression fracture of the thoracic spine. A sneeze spinal vertebral fracture than Auntie He is more exaggerated is Zhang grandmother, 68-year-old Zhang grandmother has always been very good health, daily cooking, grocery shopping, cleaning …… household chores are basically her own do. But just two days ago, Zhang grandmother in the home to sort out old clothes, choked by the dust to the nose, after a loud sneeze, then suddenly the back pain is very strong, not to mention stand, even sit can not sit up. The family was stunned and rushed to the hospital for an ambulance. After a detailed examination and an X-ray, the doctor concluded that “the old woman’s thoracic vertebrae had suffered a compression fracture.” The family was surprised to learn that the grandmother was fractured – there is no mistake, a sneeze on the fracture? The doctor diagnosed compression fracture “bane” is osteoporosis sneeze, will spinal fracture? The reporter learned that since the winter, the orthopedic department of the major hospitals in Nanning often encounter elderly patients who come to the doctor for spinal vertebral compression fractures. “In the orthopedic clinic, there are often elderly people who had no serious trauma but had a fracture.” The hospital often sees middle-aged and elderly female patients like Auntie He and Grandma Zhang. At most, a dozen are seen in a week. Why are older people prone to fractures? When people reach old age, the functions of all organs in the body degenerate and osteoporosis occurs quietly. The human trunk is supported by the spine, and the vertebral bones are mainly composed of cancellous bone, so osteoporosis is most likely to occur in cancellous bone. When osteoporosis, bone trabeculae become thin, reduce, disappear, or even form cavities, the strength of the bones, the ability to resist compression is greatly reduced, the weight-bearing function of the vertebral bones is reduced, at this time inadvertently, from time to time, some tiny fractures occur. Therefore, vertebral compression fractures in the elderly can be caused by very small “violence”, such as improper positioning or excessive force while doing housework, or even coughing, sneezing or bumps in the car. Vertebral compression fractures are a common complication in older adults with osteoporosis, with an overall incidence of 1.23% and a female incidence of 1.53%. In vertebral compression fractures, more than one third of patients present with chronic intractable pain. The pain and spinal deformity caused by the disease can cause further bone loss in patients, and the loss of bone mass can cause further loss of vertebral strength, making them more susceptible to fracture, resulting in a vicious cycle. “Older women after menopause are susceptible to osteoporosis.” Older patients should have their bone density measured annually. If there is any of these symptoms – low back pain, bone pain, shortening of stature, hunchback, fracture of the spine, hip or any part of the wrist, loss of strength, leg cramps – the possibility of osteoporosis should be suspected. Daily diet should be low in sodium, high in potassium and high in calcium. It should also be supplemented with appropriate amounts of calcium and vitamin D.
