How long should you not drink alcohol with cephalexin

With cephalosporin antibiotics, an interval of at least 1 week is usually recommended before drinking alcohol, and 2 weeks is recommended for slow metabolizers before considering alcohol consumption. Most cephalosporins contain a methylthiotetrazole group in their drug structure, which can produce a disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol, and the severity of the reaction is directly proportional to the drug dose and the amount of alcohol consumed. In mild cases, chest tightness and shortness of breath may occur, while in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmia and blood pressure may drop, even endangering life. Generally, after taking cephalosporins, it is best for patients to drink alcoholic beverages in moderation after 7 days, otherwise shock and syncope are very likely to occur. For the vast majority of the group, it is recommended to wait at least 1 week before considering drinking alcohol. For elderly people with more underlying diseases, it is recommended to apply cephalosporin antibiotics for 2 weeks before drinking alcohol, while closely observing changes in the condition to avoid unexpected reactions. In addition, patients also need to prohibit alcohol consumption while taking nitroimidazole antibiotics, and should drink more water after taking nitroimidazole and cephalosporin drugs to promote drug metabolism.
