How to reduce the swelling of fracture

The healing process of fracture is divided into hematoma inflammation mechanization phase, primitive bone scab formation phase, and bone scab remodeling and shaping phase, and swelling mainly occurs in the first two phases, which generally requires treatment such as reset, braking, ice and heat packs, and elevation of the affected limb, as well as drug treatment to improve the swelling. I. Hematoma inflammation mechanization phase: After the fracture, local rupture and bleeding of tiny blood vessels can occur, forming a hematoma around the affected area, along with inflammatory cell infiltration, so swelling of the limb will occur in the early stage. 1. Reset: try to restore the normal anatomical relationship of the displaced fracture segment, and perform surgical reset if necessary, which is a prerequisite for swelling reduction. 2. Brake: reduce the activity so that the tissue at the fracture can get sufficient rest. Without braking, the fracture end moves repeatedly and stimulates the soft tissue, so it is difficult for the swelling to subside, so braking should be applied; 3. Ice and hot compresses: ice should be applied within 48 hours to reduce local congestion and edema; after 48 hours, the local swelling gradually subsides and hot compresses can be done. Of course, it depends on the local swelling and the doctor’s advice. If the swelling is very strong and still swollen after a week, it is not suitable to do hot compresses; 4. Elevate the affected limb: after fixing it with a cast or a small splint, elevate the affected limb so that it is higher than the heart, which is beneficial to reduce swelling. If the ankle is sprained and put into a cast, when resting at home and lying in bed, the foot should be elevated to facilitate venous reflux and swelling; 5. Medication: you can use drugs to reduce tissue edema, such as Mai Zhi Ling, or apply some dehydrating drugs to help reduce swelling. In addition, there are also Chinese herbal medicines to activate blood circulation and remove blood stasis, which can be used according to medical advice. Second, the original bone scab formation period: adults generally need 3-6 months, at this time, generally the limb swelling is no longer obvious, the fracture has reached the clinical healing stage. If there is still swelling at the fracture location, it is suspected that there is a problem with the vein. If there is venous thrombosis, anticoagulant medication may be used under medical supervision to help reduce the swelling. If the swelling is caused by poor bone scab healing, active medical attention should be sought to clarify the need for surgical treatment. C. Bone scab remodeling and shaping period: It is the last period of fracture healing, which usually takes 1-2 years. The problem of limb swelling rarely occurs at this time, and if there is swelling, appropriate functional exercises can be performed to promote venous return and facilitate swelling reduction. Patients should note that functional exercise is a treatment tool throughout the whole process. Reasonable exercise can promote swelling reduction, improve blood circulation in the limb, reduce muscle atrophy and promote fracture healing, so patients can perform moderate functional exercise according to their own situation and under the guidance of doctors.
