Appropriate time for surgery in children with congenital malformations

On the Internet, in the clinic and in the ward, we often meet families of children with congenital anomalies who ask when is the right time to operate? Here, we only talk about the choice of surgery time for general congenital malformations, such as syndactyly, polydactyly, short finger malformation, etc. The following two aspects should be taken into consideration when choosing the time for surgery: 1. If the child develops a little bit and grows up, the risk of surgical anesthesia will be reduced and the difficulty will be lowered; the operation will be convenient and it will be easier for more delicate surgical operation; the postoperative care of the child will be more convenient. These factors will directly affect the results of the surgery. 2. To prevent the existence of deformities from causing psychological shadows to the child, the surgery should be performed before the child understands, or at least before the child starts kindergarten and begins to live in a group. Considering the above two points, the best time to operate is at the age of 1.5 years (18 months). It is important to emphasize that the child’s deformity will certainly make parents psychologically uncomfortable, in the face of the strange eyes of outsiders, psychological pressure, reluctance to take the child to friends and relatives, in front of the public, hoping to give the child surgery orthopedic as soon as possible, which is understandable. However, parents must resist the pressure, because we have a common goal, which is to give the child the best treatment, and the best treatment needs to have the best time for treatment. Of course, if the deformity is progressively worse, or if the deformity will have other serious effects, surgery will have to be done earlier.
