Methods and timing of breast reconstruction for breast cancer patients

Breast reconstruction methods Breast reconstruction methods are divided into two categories: allogeneic tissue implants and autologous tissue transplants, depending on the source of the filler. The most common type of allograft implant is breast implant or expander implant. The advantage of this type of surgery is that the surgery is relatively simple, with little trauma and quick recovery after surgery, but some patients need to undergo radiotherapy after surgery, which limits the application of immediate breast implant, so currently most choose immediate expander implant. Breast reconstruction by autologous tissue grafting has its own tissue source, mainly lower abdominal tissue flap and latissimus dorsi flap, among which lower abdominal tissue flap and latissimus dorsi + prosthesis are most widely used. Lower abdominal tissue is mainly used for patients with large breasts and too much fat in the abdomen, so it can be used for two purposes. For patients with small breasts, the latissimus dorsi muscle flap transfer can be chosen, and depending on the situation, the tissue plus or minus the prosthesis can be chosen. Timing of Breast Reconstruction The timing of breast reconstruction is divided into immediate breast reconstruction and delayed breast reconstruction. Immediate breast reconstruction is the reconstruction of the breast immediately after mastectomy. Patients who choose immediate breast reconstruction can have only one surgery, and the postoperative changes in psychological status due to breast loss will be less volatile and the cost of surgery will be less than postponed surgery. In recent years, the number of breast cancer patients has increased significantly, but with the improvement of diagnosis and treatment, the survival period of postoperative breast cancer patients has increased significantly, coupled with women’s increasing pursuit of beauty, the number of postponed breast reconstruction surgery is on the rise, and many domestic and international studies have shown that there is no significant difference in the survival period between postoperative breast cancer reconstruction patients and patients without reconstruction, and the number of women who undergo breast reconstruction is increasing year by year. However, the specific surgical method, timing and complications need to be discussed in detail with your supervising physician.
