Mechanism of Chinese medicine for coronary heart disease

Modern medical research into coronary artery disease has gained rapid momentum in the last 20 years or so. Whereas previously the focus was always on the stenosis of the coronary arteries (which is also still important, but not enough), now more attention is paid to the stability of the coronary plaque and the presence of thrombosis. Therefore, the understanding of the mechanism of herbal medicine for coronary heart disease has also improved with modern medicine. At the beginning, when I was studying, the research of herbal medicine in the treatment of coronary heart disease always focused on the dilatation of coronary arteries and the degree of improvement of myocardial ischemia, while a large number of experiments proved that the effects of herbal medicine in the treatment of coronary heart disease, such as vasodilatation, anti-platelet aggregation and lipid regulation, are not as strong, and the effects of herbal medicine in vasodilatation are not as strong as those of western nitrates, anti-platelet aggregation are not as strong as those of aspirin and Bolivar, and lipid regulation are not as strong as those of statins. However, in practice, when angina pectoris of coronary heart disease is still present after using the above mentioned western drugs (some have already undergone stenting or/and bypass surgery), the use of Chinese herbal medicine treatment can obtain satisfactory results, reduce the attacks of angina pectoris, improve life treatment, and significantly reduce the acute events of coronary heart disease. Therefore, I believe that the mechanism of Chinese medicine in treating coronary heart disease should be a systemic and comprehensive mechanism of action, which should be gradually unraveled as people’s understanding of coronary heart disease research increases. Personally, I am opposed to explaining TCM as modern medicine progresses, but the progress of modern medicine is very useful to improve our understanding and clinical efficacy of TCM. At the same time, I believe that the treatment of coronary heart disease with TCM should also start from the diagnosis and treatment of TCM, where the qi, blood, fluids, and the function of the internal organs are all important.
